The city of Yakima gets its name from the native American Yakima tribe who inhabited the region before the arrival of British colonialists. The city was officially established in 1865. As of 2020, Yakima has a population of 244,000 people – all of whom occupy 28 square miles of land. This makes Yakima the eleventh most populous city in the state of Washington. The economy is predominantly agrarian, and yields about 77% of hops grown in the United States.
Founded in 1890, the Department is headquartered in the Richard A. Zais Jr’s Center for Law and Justice. Yakima Police Department (YPD) is divided into three divisions for more systematic maintenance of law and order. The three divisions are Patrol, Detective, and Special Operations. Under the special operations division, the YPD targets some of the most recurring issues of the community, including a Gang Unit, Narcotics Unit, and a SWAT unit. It also has a unit of School resource officers that protect the students, staff, and administration of schools from prospective attacks by anti-social elements. As of 2014, The YPD answered approximately 79,500 calls for service and arrested around 3,280 criminals for serious violations of law and order.
The Department has also created an innovative method of tackling criminal activity by initiating a Community Services Office, that tries to inculcate values in its population – thereby preventing crime. Today, Yakima Police Department has 140 full-time sworn officers and 40 civilian employees. The Department holds criminal investigation technology in high regard and has invested accordingly. With a remarkably low crime rate to prove their effectiveness, the Yakima Police Department stay true to their mission statement: “To preserve life and property, reduce fear in the community through prevention and detection of crime, protection of persons and property, the maintenance of order in public places, to anticipate and respond to events that threaten public order, and to preserve the rights of citizens.” Applications for the Yakima police department test can be found online.
