Visualization Questions on the Police Exam!

July 1st, 2021 visualization questions police exam

What are Visualization Questions?

Visualization questions on the police exam are routinely asked.

For these types of police test question, you will be presented with a diagram and asked a series of questions about that image. You will need to consult the image and ensure that you have identified the correct answer.

There are two challenges to visualization questions:

  • Timing: you have limited time to analyse a detailed image.
  • Accuracy: many decoy answers and tricks are present in the image.

Therefore, to succeed at the police exam, you must be fast and accurate.

These are the skills tested on this phase of the police exam. Most police departments throughout the United States include these police questions on the exam. Contact your local police department if you remain unsure.

Sample Visualization Questions

The problem and questions below were asked on the New York City Police Department test. Therefore, this is the most accurate reflection on the kinds of question you can expect for your police department.

Two questions were asked about the following image.

Analyse the image for a minute or two, before attempting to answer the following two problems:

  • Based on the image above, how many square feet is the property?
  • Based on the image above, if a domestic dispute were reported to the local department from Bath 2 (16A), which of these routes is the most direct route to the location in the correct order:

(A) 40, 38, 36, 34, 24, 62, 56, 16A

(B) 40, 38, 39, 14, 30, 24, 62, 56, 16A

(C) 36, 34, 24, 62, 56, 58, 16A

(D) 39, 34, 30, 24, 22, 62, 56, 16A

We provide the answers to these visualization questions later in this guide.

For now, though, let’s take a moment to review how best to prepare for these kinds of police exam questions.

Police Test Preparation

First, you should note how the questions apply pressure. Here you have unlimited time to answer these questions. You are not so blessed during the police test when your time is very much abbreviated.

You must be prepared for these kinds of question and have a strategy in mind as to how you will accurately and swiftly answer them.

Step One – Analyse the Diagram

When you encounter visualization questions on the police exam, do not rush into the questions.

First, get to grips with the diagram first.

Go through the diagram and have a complete understanding of all details – and where you are likely to source information. Once you are familiar with the diagram, then you can begin to read the questions. Do not read all the questions at the same time, otherwise you will be overwhelmed with information.

Instead, answer one question at a time and remain focused on that question.

Step Two – Avoid Trick Questions / Answers

Examiners often put together diagrams where applicants are likely to choose the first piece of information they see. This information may even be relevant to the actual correct answer, but it has been placed there to trick the viewer.

We see the same phenomenon on the police math test. There, examiners often add more details and numbers than are needed to answer any given question. Many applicants attempt to use all numbers when this is not required. Instead, what the examiner is trying to test is your ability to discern relevant detail from irrelevant detail.

The same is true of visualization questions on the police exam. Try to avoid choosing the very first piece of seemingly relevant detail you see. Instead, be sure that you are right. Check through the rest of the diagram and verify that you have chosen the correct answer.

Step Three – Timing Discipline

It’s very tempting to rush through the police exam. You may even be confident that questions are easy and so this is a risk worth taking.

But that would be to make a mistake.

Instead, as with all aspects of the police officer test, candidates should take their time. Of course, not too much time – but a proportionate amount of time per question and per section. Stay paced, but neither too slow nor too fast. That way, you avoid panicking or rushing and throwing the entire exam into a frenzied chaos.

The same principle must apply to visualization questions on the police exam. They are trying to test both your inductive and deductive reasoning skills, and it’s crucial that you take your time, demonstrate the correct answer, but do so in a way that doesn’t increase the risk of errors.

Time management for any exam is critical to success.

Take Home Message

Visualization questions are routinely asked on the police exam.

As we have learned, you will be presented with a complex, detailed diagram and asked a series of questions about that image. We have identified three strands of attack that you should consider:

  • The need to analyse the diagram before answering questions.
  • The need to answer questions one by one.
  • The need to avoid choosing the first details you see, as they may be decoys.
  • The need to build time management into your exam strategy.

By absorbing these police test prep skills into your exam performance, there is no reason why you cannot ace these questions on the day of your police test.

Earlier, we asked two questions about the cross-section of the house. The correct answers are:

  • Answer 1 – (C)
  • Answer 2 – (A)
