The Mississippi River forms a municipal boundary around part of St. Paul, and the city enjoys over 160 park areas, making it second only to neighboring Minneapolis in terms of the quality of its outdoor spaces.

The Saint Paul Police Department (SPPD) consists of four separate divisions and employs over 800 people, of which 600 are sworn officers. The Saint Paul Police Department is the second largest agency in the state, after the city of Minneapolis Police Department.
To pass the Saint Paul Police Department test, applicants must complete both a physical and written exam, as well as training modules covering skills like mathematical reasoning, memory and spatial orientation. Prospective officers are also required to undergo psychological evaluation and a thorough medical exam.
Once accepted, The St. Paul Police Department requires trainee officers to participate in a police academy that consists of 17 weeks of intense instruction covering every aspect of police work, from tactical training to criminal law and crime scene investigation.
