About Santa Ana Police Department Test

Santa Ana Police Department (SAPD) is the official law enforcement agency of Santa Ana city- which is the second-most populated city in orange county, California. It is also accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA). Currently the department has over 300 full-time sworn officers and 200 civilian personnel. Below, you can learn more about the agency, on what you need to do to pass the Santa Ana police department test, and enlist in the police academy for further training.

Motto: “Integrity, Respect, Compassion”

History: Santa Ana Police Department was formally established in 1886, nearly 17 years after the founding of the city. The municipal council found law enforcement an extremely difficult task due to the rapidly increasing population and thus established an official policing body that originally comprised of a Chief of Police and 6 part-time patrol officers. The department did not have a headquarters of its own, until 1904. Since its founding, 4 officers have lost their lives in the line of duty.

Size: Santa Ana Police department covers an area of just under 28 square miles, in which a population of over 324,000 people resides. The city is divided into 4 geographical patrolling districts: Westend district, south coast district, northeast district, and southeast district. Each district has its standalone patrol unit, commanded by a District Commander.

Headquarters: 60 Civic Center Plaza, Santa Ana, CA 92701, United States

Divisions: The department is divided into 4 major bureaus: administrative bureaus – which allocates finances, conducts recruitment and training programs and overlooks the IT department; investigations bureau – which conducts criminal investigations and special investigations; field operations bureau – which carries out patrolling in the city, manages and controls traffic, and overlooks the functioning of the operations division and support division; jail bureau – which supervises the city jail. This division is staffed by 94 civilian staff.

How to become a deputy: Candidates must pass the Santa Ana police department test – which is composed of a written test, a physical agility test, an oral board interview, a polygraph examination, and a bilingual oral-fluency exam. The written Frontline National Examination is a computerized test that consists of multiple-choice questions. Candidates must pass the 3 sections of the test: video-based human relations test, report writing test, and comprehension test. The physical agility test consists of 5 timed-events and candidates must secure a minimum score of 384 points to qualify.

Average salary: $58,700-$62,900 annually, rising with position and experience.

Police academy: Once candidates pass the Santa Ana Police department test, successful applicants are enlisted to the academy. It takes 26-weeks of training in core skills through which officers receive a comprehensive understanding of the duties of the job – not just in theory but also in practice.

Registration: Further information on Santa Ana police exam can be found online. At present, competition for places within the academy is high.
