About Pittsburgh Bureau of Police

Pittsburgh Bureau of Police Department (PBP) is the third-largest law enforcement agency in the state of Pennsylvania – with more than 1,400 full-time sworn officers. The bureau is one of the few municipal law enforcement agencies in the state that is officially accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA). Due to PBP’s untiring and dedicated service, Pittsburgh is known to be one of the safest cities in the country, with crime rates lower than the country average. More information on the agency, the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police test, and the police academy can be found below.

Motto: “Accountability, Integrity, and Respect

History: Officially established in 1857, Pittsburgh Bureau of Police is the second-oldest law enforcement agency in the state of Pennsylvania. The bureau started out as a night patrol team, with 4 city constables. The team was under the command of a High constable who was appointed by the mayor of the city. However, officers were not employed full-time until 1868. Since its founding, over 91 officers have lost their lives in the line of duty.

Size: Pittsburgh Bureau of Police covers an area of just over 58 square miles, in which a population of just over 305,000 people resides. The city is divided into 6 zones for more efficient policing.

Headquarters: 1203 Western Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA

Divisions: There are 3 main divisions within the department: operations department – which patrols the 6 zones of the city and is responsible for traffic management and SWAT operations; investigations branch – which investigates into personal crimes, property crimes, abuse, and traffic of substances; administration branch – which is responsible for conducting research and planning, training and recruiting officers into the academy, allocating budgets, transfer of personnel and other internal affairs.

How to become an officer: Presently, candidates must PBP test which is composed of a written examination, Municipal Police Officers Education and Training Commission (MPOETC) fitness test, an oral board interview, a written psychological test, and a thorough background check. The written examination comprises multiple-choice questions aimed at assessing candidates’ core competencies in areas of communication, logical reasoning and analysis, and problem-solving.

Average salary: $44,720-$52,000 annually, rising with an increase in position, responsibility, and experience.

Police academy: Candidates who pass the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police test are admitted to the City of Pittsburgh Police Training Academy. The training program is an intensive course that spans for 32 weeks. The training imparts core competencies to recruits, that are both theoretical and practical.

Registration: More information on the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police exam can be found on their website. There is high competition for places in the department and only the best will be invited to attend the training program at the academy. Candidates are expected to prepare well for the exam – especially the MPOETC physical fitness test which examines the candidates’ performance in the 300-meter sprint, bench press, sit-ups, and 1.5-mile run.
