About Oregon Correctional Officer Test

Candidates seeking a career as a correctional officer in Oregon must take the corrections exam. This is a series of tests that examines a candidates’ performance in communication, physical fitness, psychological robustness, and a thorough background check that verifies whether the candidate is a suitable fit for the role of correctional officer. Before we learn more about the Oregon correctional officer test, let’s first briefly learn more about the department.

Oregon Department of Corrections (ODOC) is headquartered in Salem and currently has 14 prison facilities. ODOC also oversees more complex functions of law enforcement including recidivism control, jail inspections, correctional programs to rehabilitate inmates, and overseeing community programs for inmates on parole. There are currently 15,000 prison inmates and further 14,700 inmates on parole. Since ODOC was established, 10 correctional officers have lost their lives in the line of duty. ODOC oversees prison facilities and inmate management over the area of the state, which is 98,400 square miles and whose population is approximately 4.2 million people.

There are many different parts to the Oregon corrections exam. First, candidates must meet the eligibility criteria. Next, they must take the NTN REACT test which involves a reading test, math test, and report writing test – all of which must be completed within 2.5 hours. Candidates must achieve a score of 70 or more to pass the test. Successful candidates will be enrolled in the Basic Corrections Course (BCC) which is an 8-week intense program that teaches corrections officers the skills and knowledge and practice mechanisms needed to function as an effective practitioner of the role.

Competition for correctional officer places is currently high. Application forms for Oregon correctional officer test can be found online.
