About Nevada Correctional Officer Test

There are several parts to the Nevada correctional officer test. Candidates will be asked to undertake a physical fitness test, a psychological evaluation, and an entry written exam. Before we turn to these tests and eligibility criteria, let’s first learn a bit more about Nevada Department of Corrections.

Nevada Department of Corrections (NDOC) oversees state prison facilities and the management and supervision of criminals on parole. The department is headquartered in Carson City and is currently overseen by the agency executive, Charles Daniels. NDOC currently has 11 correctional facilities and 10 conservation camps. Its death row facility can be found at Ely State prison – which executes inmates via lethal injection. As the state prison facility for Nevada, it serves the legal jurisdiction of approximately 3 million people over an area of 111,000 square miles – though most citizens are based in a few cities, most notably Las Vegas.

To become a correctional officer in Nevada, candidates must meet the eligibility criteria. This includes being 21-years old at the time of application and to have completed a high school diploma or GED and have 2-years work experience in any role. Candidates who have completed an associate degree in criminal justice are only required to have 1.5 years’ work experience.

To pass the Nevada corrections exam, candidates must complete a series of tests. Among these include the physical abilities test where candidates are examined on their ability to perform vertical jumps, a 300m run, upper body strength, and endurance. Candidates are also subjected to an entry written exam, background investigation, psychological interview, and medical assessment. Candidates who have previously committed a felony are automatically disqualified from becoming a correctional officer in Nevada.

Competition for places within NDOC is currently high. Only the highest-scoring applicants will make it through to the academy for advanced theory and practical training including firearms, self-defense, first-aid, and population control.

Application forms for the Nevada corrections test can be found online.
