Headed by Chief Charlie Cato, the Mesquite police department splits the city into 9 police regions. The police department has 4 bureaus, each led by a captain: Staff Support, Operations, Technical Services and Criminal Investigations. The Mesquite police department is currently served by a total of 327 employees, which provide a total community of approximately 143,500 residents in an area of 46.2 square miles.  Department yearly budget is $33.8 million.

To succeed at the Mesquite police department test, candidates must take three different kinds of exam. First, the police written test – which tests an applicant’s ability at math, memory, reading comprehension, incident report writing, and situational awareness. Second, candidates must take a fitness exam – testing endurance, upper body strength, and mobility. Finally, candidates take an oral board exam. Success at all three parts of the Mesquite police test means the highest scoring applicants will make it through to the local police academy.
