About Mesa Police Department Test

Mesa Police Department (Mesa PD) is the third-largest law enforcement agency in the state of Arizona, with more than 800 sworn officers and 400 civilian personnel. Mesa PD is one of the 4 accredited police departments that is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) in Arizona. Below, we explore more about the agency, how you can pass the Mesa police department test and advance onto the police academy.

Motto: “Commitment to excellence”

History: Although there were elected marshals carrying out patrolling of the city since 1883, Mesa PD was founded in 1931. The department adopted its uniform and badge in 1935. Police officers did not receive training, due to the lack of police academies in the city. In 1969, the Arizona Law Enforcement Officer Advisory (ALEOAC) ordered recruits to attend a 440-hour training program at the Phoenix Regional Police Academy. Since its establishment, 3 officers have lost their lives in the line of duty.

Size: The Mesa PD department covers an area of just under 138 square miles, in which a population of just over 462,000 people resides. The city is divided into 4 geographical divisions: Central division, Red Mountain division, Superstition division, and Fiesta division, to carry out law enforcement efficiently.

Headquarters: Mesa Police Department, 130 North Robson, Mesa, Arizona 85201

Divisions: there are 4 main divisions within the department: Administrative Services, Countrywide Operations, Custody Operations, and Patrol Operations.

How to become an officer: At present, candidates must take the Mesa Police Department test, which is composed of a written examination, physical test, a background investigation, a polygraph examination, and a human resource hiring review board. The written test is conducted to test the candidates’ cognitive ability, grammar, and problem-solving skills. It is a multiple-choice test and a minimum score of 70% must be obtained in order to proceed to the physical test. The physical test consists of a timed obstacle course. Candidates must be able to drag a body, chain-link, climb a solid fence climb, and run 500 yards, with a minimum time to qualify.

Average salary: $54,973-$58,000 annually, rising with position and experience.

Police academy: Candidates who pass the Mesa Police Department test are admitted into The Mesa Public Safety Training Facility for a 26-week basic training program. The basic training program is designed to impart core competencies, such as law enforcement best practices, firearms operation, the implication of laws and policies. The training provides both theoretical insight and practical skills to recruits. This is followed by an advanced Field Training Program (FTP), which is an on-the-job program.

Registration: Further information about the Mesa Police exam can be found on their website. Currently, competition for places within the department is high.
