Motto: “Justice and Peace”

History: Founded in 1827, MPD is one of the oldest police departments to be established in the U.S.  It started out simply, with night-watch services, before going on to grow by 30% in new recruits in the post-Civil War period. The first patrol team that carried out patrolling duties in wagons were called “Black Maria”. Since its founding, 66 officers have their lost their lives in the line of duty.

Size: Memphis Police Department exercises its jurisdiction over an area of 315 square miles. Around 650,000 people reside in the 9 precincts of Memphis city.

Headquarters: 170 N Main St, Memphis, TN 38103

Divisions: The Department has 5 main divisions, namely: administrative department, investigative department, special operations department, uniform patrol department (subdivided into 2 units) and the information technology department.

How to become an officer: The process begins by filling out an online application form. This is followed by a series of tests conducted by the Memphis Police Department Training Academy (MPDTA). Candidates take the MPDTA Battery of Test, which comprises of a written examination, running test, obstacle course and a behavioral interview. Candidates are expected to have a detailed knowledge of the department’s functioning and to possess essential communication, logical reasoning and analysis, and teamwork skills.

Average salary: $49,727-$53,456 annually. The Salary increases experience, position, and responsibility.

Police academy: On passing the MPDTA Battery of Test, successful candidates join the police academy. Candidates are then expected to undertake a 23-week intensive training program, in which core skills are enhanced through theory and practice. Training takes place in the Memphis Police Department Training Academy, 4371 Academy Drive, Memphis, TN 38127. Training programs vary for different positions, such as Police Recruits and PST (Police Serving Technician) Recruits.

Registration: Further information on the application procedure and tests conducted can be found on the MPD’s official website. Due to the department’s renowned reputation, competition for places is very high and only the most competent applicants who pass the tests will be invited to attend the academy.
