About Louisville Metro Police Department

Louisville is the largest city in the state of Kentucky, with a population of 766,000 within the greater metropolitan boundary.

Louisville was named after King Louis XVI of France, way back in 1778, making it one of the oldest cities in the USA, west of the Appalachian mountain range.

The city was originally formed due to its close proximity to the Falls of Ohio, which created a natural blockade, meaning river boats had to dock there and have their cargo moved around the falls by land.

Louisville is known worldwide as both the home of Kentucky Fried Chicken and the famous Kentucky Derby. The city has a proud sporting heritage too, being the birthplace of Muhammad Ali and the “Louisville Slugger” baseball bat.

These days, Louisville’s fortunes are on the up. The city has seen large scale redevelopment and many of its once shabby urban neighborhoods have now been completely gentrified.

Combine all that with a thriving university population, growing tourism and an economy that continues to draw in young professionals, and it’s clear Louisville’s future is bright.

The Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD) began operating on the 6th of January 2003, as part of a merger process that consolidated the city force with that of the surrounding Jefferson County. Before that, the force was simply known as the “Louisville Police Department”, and was formed way back in 1806 by a band of city of watchmen and the town’s early trustees.

Today, the LMPD is headed by Robert Schroeder, and consists of eight patrol units and a number of specialist divisions. The LMPD has a total staff of around 1,500 people, most of whom are based in the department’s downtown headquarters.

To pass the Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD) test, applicants will have to show competence in a written and physical exam, as well as taking part in a structured oral assessment and a polygraph test. The Louisville Metro Police Department test includes 24 weeks (1,000 hours) of intensive physical and academic preparation, with recruits studying criminal justice, human behavior, law, and criminal investigation.

Application forms for the Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD) test can be found online.
