About Long Beach Police Department

Staffed by over 1,200 employees, 800 of whom are full-time sworn officers, Long Beach Police Department (LBPD), is the official police department of Long Beach, the seventh-largest city in the state of California. It is also the second-largest law enforcement agency in Los Angeles.

Motto: “Ethics, Intelligence, Respect”

History: Long Beach Police Department was established in 1888. Initially, elected city marshals headed the department’s patrolling and law enforcement. However, in 1908, the city council amended its ordinance to make the Chief of Police an appointed head of the city’s police department.

Size: The Long Beach police department’s jurisdiction spans an area of just over 51 square miles, in which a population of around 460,000 people resides.

Headquarters: 400 W. Broadway Long Beach, CA 90802

Divisions: The department is divided into 5 major bureaus, each carrying out a specific function: administration bureau – which maintains personnel records, manages transfers between divisions and carries out community engagement programs; financial bureau – which is responsible for issuing bills, maintaining accounts and allocating funds; investigative bureau – which carries out criminal investigations, apprehends, suspects and prevents abuse; patrol bureau – this bureau takes up over 40% of the department’s finances and close to 50% of its officers. It carries out frequent patrolling of the 4 patrolling divisions of the city; Support Bureau – which is responsible for the maintenance of prisons and also recruitment of new officers into the department.

How to become an officer: Candidates are required to take up the P.O.S.T. ENTRY-LEVEL LAW ENFORCEMENT TEST BATTERY (PELLETB) – which is a written test that can be taken free of charge, and National Testing Network’s (NTN) FrontLine National Exam – which is also a written test, but is chargeable. The FrontLine national exam is composed of three sections: video, reading, and writing. Candidates must secure a minimum score of 45 in the PELLETB and a minimum of 65, 70, and 70 in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd sections respectively of the Frontline national exam. The tests are aimed to assess the cognitive abilities of candidates, their communication skills, and their reading and writing skills. Candidates must also pass the physical abilities test (PAT) which comprises 3 sections: agility course timed run, upper body/core assessment test. The PAT is designed to gauge the fitness and endurance level of candidates. This is then followed by a panel-led oral interview, a polygraph examination, and a thorough background investigation.

Average salary: $58,627-$68,394 annually, rising with experience and responsibility.

Police academy: Candidates who pass the Long Beach police department test may join the police academy. The basic training program, that all new recruits have to undertake, is for a duration of 27 weeks. The training officers comply with Peace Officers Standards and Training (POST) standards as well as OSHA mandates. Recruits are trained to face all scenarios with both theoretical and practical knowledge with in-service training, human relations and diversity training, and the police pistol range.

Registration: Further information on the Long Beach police exam can be found on their official website. Due to the department’s exceptional reputation and promising career prospects – competition for places is currently very high and only the best applicants will be enlisted into the academy.
