Entry Requirements

Louisiana State Troopers Test.

Once you have met the above minimum requirements and once your initial application has been filled and submitted, you will be expected to undertake the following subtests.

The highest performing applicants in these subtests will be invited to enter the Louisiana state trooper training academy, where they will undertake an intensive 6-week course program.

Below, you can learn more about all state trooper subtests you will be expected to undertake in Louisiana.

01

State Trooper Written Exam.

Subjects tested on the state trooper written test include:

  • Math.
  • Grammar and spelling.
  • Map reading exercises.
  • Memory tests.
  • Situational judgment.
  • Reading comprehension.
  • Incident report writing.

Long-term preparation for the written exam is essential as only the highest performing applicants make it through to the later rounds.

02

Physical Abilities Test.

Tests include:

  • 1.5-mile run
  • Obstacle course
  • Sit-ups and push-ups

Additional physical tests may also be included, at the discretion of the department.

03

Background Investigation.

Your application to Louisiana state trooper test must be honest and complete. All parts of your application must be filled out and evidence must be supplied where requested.

Your application form will be examined and reviewed. Any necessary additional checks to verify details in your form will be conducted later in the process.

04

Oral Board Exam.

Every applicant taking Louisiana state trooper test must undertake an oral board exam.

During this exam, you will be interviewed on a wide variety of questions – both relating to you and your suitability for the role, as well as more critical questions that assess your judgment when applied to specific policing scenarios.

For instance, you may be asked dynamic oral board questions that assess your reaction to how you would respond to a given situation. The oral board panel will then alter the situation and immediately request your response.

You need to be prepared; to think on your feet, but to react proportionately and professionally throughout the test.

05

Final Evaluation Tests.

You may be called upon to take a polygraph exam. If you have answered questions honestly in your background investigation, there is no reason to fear this part of the exam.

At this stage, the department may get back to you if they have found any inconsistencies with your background investigation form or whether you need to supply any additional evidence to substantiate any specific claim. Additional tests taken at this stage include:

  • Medical evaluation
  • Psychological evaluation

These are standard tests that assess both your physical and mental preparedness to meet the challenges that come with a career in law enforcement.

06

Offer of Employment.

Applicants who pass all sections of the Louisiana state trooper test will be issued an offer of employment.

You will need to accept this employment offer within the specified timeframe that the department has given you.

Measurements will also be taken for your uniform.

Once your offer of employment has been accepted, you will be given more details about when you can start training at Louisiana state trooper academy. The entire process – from your initial application to the department to entering the academy itself – typically takes 6-8 months. It varies year to year.

About Louisiana State Troopers Test

Serving Louisiana since 1937, Louisiana State Police (LSP) troopers perform a wide variety of duties. The agency began as the Louisiana highway commission with just 16 highway troopers. Today, it is a separate agency which falls under the authority of Louisiana department of public safety and corrections. These duties include working with communities to improve public safety, enforcing traffic laws and drug laws, investigating crimes, and enforcing the laws and regulations pertaining to motor carriers. It is also worth mentioning that over the passage of time, LSP has proven its feasibility in crime control and making the state safe for its citizens. Almost 1000 troopers of LSP are committed to their mission of “Ensuring safety and security of people in the state through enforcement, education and providing other essential public safety services”. LSP troopers have jurisdiction throughout the state. The agency is divided into 9 patrol troops and is headquartered at Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Among other specialized units, the agency also has an air support unit which currently has 7 pilots that are assigned to 3 operation bases located throughout the state.
