About Kansas City Police Department Test

Kansas City Police Department (KCPD) is the largest municipal law enforcement agency in the state of Missouri, with close to 2,000 employees, out of which over 1,400 are full-time sworn officers. In 2018, Kansas City Police Department received an international award for the best annual report, from the International Association of Law Enforcement Planners. Here, we learn more about the police department as well as how you can pass the Kansas City police exam and join the academy.

Motto: “To Serve and Protect”

History: Established in 1874, KCPD is the 2nd oldest police department in the state, with a rich legacy. The department was initially governed by a board of marshals appointed by the Governor, but it was only in 1932 that the department came under the jurisdiction of the city council. Since its founding, 119 officers have laid down their lives in the line of duty.

Size: Kansas City Police Department’s jurisdiction covers an area of nearly 320 square miles, in which a population of just under 500,000 people resides.

Headquarters: 1125 Locust St, Kansas City, MO 64106, United States

Divisions: KCPD is divided into 5 operational bureaus, each of which is headed by an operations sergeant. The bureaus are: administration bureau – which is responsible for human resource and information technology-related functions; executive services bureau – which deals with logistics, allocation of funds and planning the budget for the department; investigations bureau – which carries out investigations into violent crimes, drug abuse cases and property cases; patrol bureau – which carries out patrolling in the 6 patrol districts of the city, manages traffic and enforces traffic laws and a special operations division that overlooks the functioning of specialized units; professional development and research bureau – which is responsible for policies and best practices related to research and training of new recruits at the department’s academy.

How to become an officer: At present, candidates are expected to clear the KCPD test that includes a written exam and a physical abilities test. The written test is designed to test the candidate’s problem-solving and analytical skills. Successful candidates have to then take a polygraph test and a thorough background investigation about the person is done. This is followed by an oral board interview and a final psychological examination.

Average salary: $51,700-$60,300 annually. This increases with responsibility, experience, and position within the department.

Police academy: Candidates who pass the Kansas City Police Department test successfully are admitted into the Kansas City Regional Police Academy (KCRPA). The training lasts for a period of 28 weeks, where recruits are equipped with all core competencies required to be professional law enforcement officers. The training is both theoretical and practical.

Registration: Further information on the application process Kansas City Police Department test can be found on their website. There is high competition for spots in the department and only the best candidates will be invited to join the academy.
