About Florida Correctional Department

To succeed at the Florida corrections exam, candidates must prepare for the FBAT – or Florida Basic Abilities Test. We discuss more about the FBAT below. First, however, let’s take a moment to learn more about the correctional department which you may be interested in joining.

Florida Department of Corrections (FDC) is the third-largest correctional facility in the United States; headquartered in Tallahassee and operates state prisons for offenders caught within the wider Floridian population of over 18 million people. As the largest agency within Florida, it has been allocated a significant budget of more than $2.5 billion to monitor almost 100,000 incarcerated inmates and a further 120,000 offenders who are conducting community punishments and undergoing regular monitoring and supervision.

After passing the Florida correctional officer test, candidates may be enlisted in any of the 143 correctional facilities throughout the state. Furthermore, there are an additional 33 work camps and 20 work-release centers. Given the enormity of this operation, Florida Department of Corrections oversees 23,000 employees who handle both the administrative and enforcement aspects of facilities. 75% of these employees work directly as either probation officers or corrections officers. The motto of FDC is, “Inspiring Success One Life at a Time” and the current agency executive is Mark S. Inch who was installed to the position in May, 2019.

Competition for places at FDC is currently high. Only the highest-scoring candidates at the Florida correctional officer exam will make it through to the academy for advanced skill and theoretical training. The FBAT tests candidate’s knowledge and ability in domains such as deductive and inductive reasoning, police memory test, written expression, and communication, reading comprehension, and spatial orientation – all of which are tested through multiple-choice question format. The results of an FBAT are valid for 4-years. Candidates are also expected to clear a physical fitness test, oral board exam, background investigation, and medical clearance before they will be accepted into the Basic Correctional Academy which involves undertaking an intense 420-hour training program that includes firearms, emergency response, supervision strategy and technique, self-defense, and CPR/first-aid.

Application forms to take Florida correctional police test can be found online.
