The highest performing applicants in these subtests will be invited to enter the Florida state trooper training academy, where they will undertake an intensive 6-week course program.

Below, you can learn more about all state trooper subtests you will be expected to undertake in Florida.

01

State Trooper Written Exam.

Subjects tested on the state trooper written test include:

  • Math.
  • Grammar and spelling.
  • Map reading exercises.
  • Memory tests.
  • Situational judgment.
  • Reading comprehension.
  • Incident report writing.

Long-term preparation for the written exam is essential as only the highest performing applicants make it through to the later rounds.

02

Physical Abilities Test.

Tests include:

  • 1.5-mile run
  • Obstacle course
  • Sit-ups and push-ups

Additional physical tests may also be included, at the discretion of the department.

03

Background Investigation.

Your application to Florida state trooper test must be honest and complete. All parts of your application must be filled out and evidence must be supplied where requested.

Your application form will be examined and reviewed. Any necessary additional checks to verify details in your form will be conducted later in the process.

04

Oral Board Exam.

Every applicant taking Florida state trooper test must undertake an oral board exam.

During this exam, you will be interviewed on a wide variety of questions – both relating to you and your suitability for the role, as well as more critical questions that assess your judgment when applied to specific policing scenarios.

For instance, you may be asked dynamic oral board questions that assess your reaction to how you would respond to a given situation. The oral board panel will then alter the situation and immediately request your response.

You need to be prepared; to think on your feet, but to react proportionately and professionally throughout the test.

05

Final Evaluation Tests.

You may be called upon to take a polygraph exam. If you have answered questions honestly in your background investigation, there is no reason to fear this part of the exam.

At this stage, the department may get back to you if they have found any inconsistencies with your background investigation form or whether you need to supply any additional evidence to substantiate any specific claim. Additional tests taken at this stage include:

  • Medical evaluation
  • Psychological evaluation

These are standard tests that assess both your physical and mental preparedness to meet the challenges that come with a career in law enforcement.

06

Offer of Employment.

Applicants who pass all sections of the Florida state trooper test will be issued an offer of employment.

You will need to accept this employment offer within the specified timeframe that the department has given you.

Measurements will also be taken for your uniform.

Once your offer of employment has been accepted, you will be given more details about when you can start training at Florida state trooper academy. The entire process – from your initial application to the department to entering the academy itself – typically takes 6-8 months. It varies year to year.

About Florida Highway Patrol Test

Florida highway patrol (FHP) was formed in 1939 for the purpose of investigating criminal laws and traffic crashes on Florida’s highway. It is the division of Florida department of highway safety and motor vehicles. 82 years back the agency began with just 59 patrolmen in an area of 1,938,564 miles and investigated 1,000 crashes. Now, with a total of 2,475 employees, including- 1946 troopers and 529 civilians, the department enforces commercial vehicle and motor vehicle laws throughout the state and is charged with investigating motor vehicle accidents. FHP are also responsible for investigating traffic crashes in incorporated areas. The agency is having 9 airplanes and 31 dogs for patrolling services.

Florida highway patrol holds a strong history of successful training programs. Such as, the director of FHP started a training academy in Bradenton with just 40 students, and 32 students from that class were passed out by the end of 1940.

In FHP, the director oversees one captain who is responsible for office of professional compliance and one lieutenant colonel that is responsible for special services and patrol operations. The agency strives to achieve the core values of protection, courtesy and service by ensuring the security of Florida’s citizens.

FHP has been awarded by the commission for Florida law enforcement accreditation (CFA). Moreover, in 1948 it also received national recognition for its driver license program.
