About California Correctional Officer Test

California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) is the third-largest law enforcement agency in the United States. Currently, there are 67,000 employees – 24,000 of which are peace officers (correctional officers of the state). It’s worth noting that correctional officers in California are sworn police officers with peace officer powers. The size of the department is extraordinary – involved in the administration of corrections over 164,000 square miles and with a population of 40 million people. Overseeing this administration is a budget of approximately $11 billion annually. CDCR is headquartered in Sacramento. There are currently almost 120,000 people in the state prison system.

Applicants are expected to undergo a comprehensive range of exams to pass the California correctional officer test. Below, we have put together all stages of the process – from your initial application right through to being offered a place at the training academy.

Written Examination: This typically assesses your reading comprehension, writing ability, and reasoning skills. It may include multiple-choice questions, essays, or situational judgment scenarios.

Physical Agility Test (PAT): This evaluates your physical fitness and ability to perform job-related tasks such as running, lifting, and climbing.

Background Investigation: Expect an extensive background check to verify your qualifications and suitability for the role. This may include a review of criminal history, employment history, and personal references.

Psychological Evaluation: You may undergo psychological testing to ensure you possess the emotional stability and mental resilience required for the job.

Interview: A panel interview is common, where you’ll be asked questions about your background, experiences, and motivation for becoming a correctional officer.

Medical Examination: This ensures you meet the physical requirements and are free from medical conditions that could impede your ability to perform the duties of a correctional officer safely.

Drug Screening: A drug test is typically conducted to ensure candidates are drug-free.

It’s crucial to check the specific requirements and procedures outlined by the agency you’re applying to, as they may have variations in their testing processes. Additionally, CDCR or other relevant agencies may provide study guides or resources to help candidates prepare for the exam.

It takes approximately 1 year to 18-months for the entire process to clear. However, this time may be longer during periods where the department is hiring a greater number of applicants.
