To pass the California corrections exam, candidates must undertake a written test, a physical fitness test (PFT), and pass a psychological interview and background check. Before we turn to the specifics of the California correctional exam, let’s briefly review the Department of Corrections itself.
California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) is the third-largest law enforcement agency in the United States. Currently, there are 67,000 employees – 24,000 of which are peace officers (correctional officers of the state). It’s worth noting that correctional officers in California are sworn police officers with peace officer powers. The size of the department is extraordinary – involved in the administration of corrections over 164,000 square miles and with a population of 40 million people. Overseeing this administration is a budget of approximately $11 billion annually. CDCR is headquartered in Sacramento. There are currently almost 120,000 people in the state prison system.
Once you have applied online, you will be contacted with a time/date to sit the California correctional officer test. This is a written test that lasts 1 hour and 45 minutes, during which you must answer 56 multiple-choice questions. These questions test the candidate’s knowledge and ability in math, reading comprehension, grammar/spelling, and communication. Typically, candidates will receive the results of their corrections exam within 3 working days. Candidates who pass the California correctional exam must then undertake a physical fitness test (PFT) which evaluates upper body strength, endurance, and agility. Candidates must then be subjected to a thorough background investigation, medical assessment and visual test, and psychological interview exam. Competition for places is currently high and only the best scoring candidates make it through to the training academy.
It takes approximately 1 year to 18-months for the entire process to clear. However, this time may be longer during periods where the department is hiring a greater number of applicants.
