About Boston Police Department Test

Accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for law enforcement agencies (CALEA), Boston Police Department (BPD) is the 20th largest Police Department in the United States. It is staffed by 2144 law enforcement officers, of whom 1575 are full-time sworn officers and the remaining 569 are civilian personnel, who aid in allied services.

History: Formally established in 1838, BPD is the oldest public-funded, organized law enforcement agency in the United States. It is also the first Department in the country to have professional, full-time sworn Police Officers. Being one of the most sophisticated and technologically advanced Police Department in the country, BPD was the first to furnish electronic images of fingerprints to the FBI for investigation, in 1995. Since its inception, 76 officers have laid down their lives in the line of duty.

Size: Boston Police Department covers an area of just under 90 square miles, in which a population of nearly 700,000 people resides.

Divisions: The Department is divided into 7 main bureaus on the basis of their functions: Bureau of Field Services, Bureau of Investigative Services, Bureau of Professional Standards, Bureau of Professional Development, Bureau of Intelligence and Analysis, Bureau of Administration and Technology, Bureau of Community Engagement. An elected Police Commissioner heads the BPD.

How to become an officer: The current procedure of recruitment is called the BPD test, which consists of a written examination, physical fitness test, and an oral board interview. Applicants must have a rounded knowledge of the department’s basic functioning and exhibit their competencies in the areas of communication, logical reasoning and analysis, and teamwork skills.

Average salary: $59,347-$69,234 annually, rising with experience and responsibility.

Police academy: Candidates who pass the Boston Police Department test are admitted to the Municipal Police Training Committee, which is the official police training academy of BPD. The training spans a duration of 20-weeks, during which candidates acquire core principles like problem-solving, procedural justice, ethical decision making, fair and impartial policing. The training is both theoretical and practical. The training programs vary, depending on the post and nature of the job.

Registration: More information about the application procedure for the Boston Police exam can be found on their official website. The Department hires candidates once in 2 years and competition for places is fairly high. The selection process is stringent and only the best candidates will be invited to attend the academy training.
