Located on an eastern bank of the Mississippi River, Baton Rouge, with a population of 220,000 inhabitants, is the second largest city in Louisiana, after New Orleans.
Like other cities in the region, Baton Rouge is a historic place. The city was officially founded in 1699, when French explorer Pierre Le Moyne d’Iberville sailed up the Mississippi River and spotted a red pole marking the boundary between indigenous tribal hunting grounds. (The French name le bâton rouge means “the red stick”)
Baton Rouge’s strategic riverside location is still important today, with the city’s massive container port ferrying cargo from the Mississippi River Delta out to the Gulf of Mexico.
Despite connections to shipping and heavy industry, Baton Rouge’s 1990s economic boom has since seen it labelled as one of the “Top 10 Places for Young Adults” to live and work. The economy has largely been transformed in recent years, and is now dominated by high-tech medical research, pharmaceutical and petrochemical operations.
Culturally, Baton Rouge has always played second fiddle to New Orleans, but the city now has thriving arts and entertainment scene all of its own, and the rich history and architecture present in the older parts of town help it to compete with its more famous Louisiana cousin.
In terms of law enforcement, Baton Rouge’s Police Department dates back to 1865, just after the end of the Civil War. The department comprises of 645 sworn Police Officers and a further 267 civilian employees.
For a career in the Baton Rouge Police Department, applicants must join Louisiana State Police Training Academy, who give trainees the skills they require to become sworn police officers. To pass the initial entrance test, applicants will have to show competence in a written and physical exam, as well as taking part in a structured oral assessment.
The Louisiana State Police Training Academy test includes 23 weeks of intensive physical and academic preparation, with recruits studying criminal justice, human behavior, law, and criminal investigation.
