About Ann Arbor Police Department

Ann Arbor is the principal city of Ann Arbor metropolitan statistical area, located in the Washtenaw County, Michigan. The 2019 US census recorded its total population at 119,980. Founded in 1824 by two land speculators, Ann Arbor was initially settled as a village and officially incorporated as a city in 1851. University of Michigan is based within the city which boosts Ann Arbor’s economy, employing a huge number of people in the medical center of University of Michigan (UMHS). During the late 1900’s, the city gained a reputation of political activism. Also known as “Tree town”, Ann Arbor contains dense forestation of several parks and residential and recreational areas. The city’s residential neighborhoods are comprised of architectural designs extending from 19th and 20th century’s exemplary styles to ranch style homes.

Established in 1833, presently Chief Cox led by the Ann Arbor police department (AAPD). The AAPD has many services and units, including a detective section, K9, traffic services unit, motorcycle and bicycle patrols, neighborhood watch, community engagement unit, and crime prevention. The department has 126 sworn officers and 151 civilian employees, covers an area of just over 28.79 square miles. The police department is located at:

To pass the Ann Arbor police department test, candidates must take a three-part examination. The police written test examines the candidate’s knowledge of math, memory, grammar/spelling, incident report writing, and reading comprehension. The physical abilities test examines a candidate’s performance at endurance, upper body strength, and mobility. Finally, candidates must take the interview exam and may be required to undertake a polygraph assessment too. Only the highest-scoring applicants on the Ann Arbor police test will make it through to the academy.
